Six Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Grand Challenges

Widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies is substantially affecting the human condition in ways that are not yet well understood. Negative unintended consequences abound including perpetuation and exacerbation societal inequalities divisions via algorithmic decision making. We present six grand challenges for scientific community to create AI human-centered, is, ethical, fair, enhance condition. These result an international collaboration across academia, industry government represent consensus views a group 26 experts field human-centered (HCAI). In essence, these advocate approach (1) centered well-being, (2) designed responsibly, (3) respects privacy, (4) follows design principles, (5) subject appropriate governance oversight, (6) interacts with individuals while respecting human’s cognitive capacities. hope their associated research directions serve as call action conduct development serves force multiplier towards more equitable sustainable societies.
